“Manifesto for an enlightened doom-watch – When impossible means certain” - by Jean-Pierre Dupuy[Reading report] by Yann Devaux

2009-12-06

Yann was part of the “Alternative Management” third year program in HEC in 2009. He is now a consultant in sustainable development.

Humanity is closer to the Apocalypse than ever. It is now certain that Human-kind can annihilate itself either with WMDs or through the irreversible deterioration of its survival conditions. The tipping point is not to come, but already passed, and what was once considered impossible is now certain. Nevertheless, although the danger has been to be part of our everyday life, we still do not believe in its existence. Facing this intricate situation, we are to carry out a reflection about Humanity's doom that both classical risk theory and traditional metaphysics cannot produce. Disaster has indeed to be tackled as a certainty, and not just as a future that might occur. To admit that disaster is inevitable is the way to find out how to make be avoided.
