Which sustainable development for little islands: the case of Reunion Island[Research paper] by Claire Nativel

2009-12-10

HEC, Grande Ecole, Alternative Management Program. During this year in Alternative Management Program, Claire Nativel was particularly interested in ecological subject such as Ecological Footprint.

Confronted with global warming and the increasing rarity of natural resources, every country in the world has to rise to the challenge of sustainable development. Our finite resources make us think of the Earth as an Island in the universe: a fragile system we have to preserve to ensure our survival. Islands are a good representation of the stakes involved in sustainable development all over the world. Reunion Island, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean, exhibits a rapid economic growth while wanting to pursue goals of sustainability. How can we take advantage of this territorial particularity? Can this Island be an inspiration for similar spaces? What sustainable development is adapted to small islands?
