The author was part of the “Alternative Management” third year program in HEC in 2010

What does the title of this book mean? How can ethics be a central piece to economic thought? This book is composed of two essays by Amartya Sen. The first defends the central place of individual freedom in the social choice process, and introduces the concept of “capabilities” as societal evaluation criteria. The second recalls the need for political arbitrage between social spending and financial conservatism, based on dialogue. Amartya Sen proposes a reflexion about the basis in economics, reminding us that it should be thought of as a science serving every one's well-being.
