Innovating in spite of ourselves?[Essay] by Pierre Lacaze


Pierre Lacaze graduated from HEC Paris (Alternative Management) in 2010.

Some inventions, like writing or cell phones have had successful destinies, while sometimes other ideas are born one day and perish not long after for lack of a sufficient audience. How is this selection made? What part does the originator of a new idea play in its posterity? Are there any means of conveying ‘faith' in a new idea so as to make it appealing and provide it with a future? Authors of ideas or innovations and new products tend to look for the key to their success, and they perhaps have the feeling that they hold the fate of their products in their own hands. Yet, do they really have any hold over them? Could innovations have a destiny in spite of us?
