Luxury and Sustainability: Cross-fertilization[Research paper] by Aurélie Gillon

Aurélie Gillon was part of the “Alternative Management” third year program in HEC in 2011. She also studied at the ENS-ULM, has a bachelor in philosophy and a Master in literature from La Sorbonne. She is very interested in the problematics of sustainable development and luxury : she contributed to create Luxury HEC, which is an association devoted to luxury in HEC and did the HEC certificate "Luxury Strategies".

Luxury and sustainability may seem at odds. However they share common values, so that they turn out to be quite close and able to nurture a meaningful dialogue. If we think beyond prejudices, we can have a head start and show how - and why - to do usual things differently or do different things in a usual way. On the one hand, sustainability can be seen by the luxury industry as a challenge which stimulates creativity and innovation at all levels of the value chain, and encourages to reinvent business models. On the other hand, the sustainability sector could take advantage of a luxury strategy.
