Private Sector Development in sub-Saharan Africa: context, modalities and stakes[Research paper] by Elise Juguet

2011-08-19

The author was part of the “Alternative Management” third year program in HEC in 2010.

This thesis proposes an analysis of the trend that makes of financial support to private firms a key tool in Sub-Saharan Africa’s development. In a first part, it enlightens the mechanisms that have made private companies become core actors in the Millenium Development Goals’ achievement, and it shows that a direct financial support is adapted to the African private sector’s case. The second part of this thesis is based on a field study made on various actors of the private sector support in France. The study shows that a direct financial support towards the private sector in sub-Saharan Africa can have a positive impact on various developmental leverages. But such a support is also a way to act in favour of a more sustainable private sector, with larger considerations than financial profit.
