What is the link between Degrowth and Work?[Research paper] by Claire-Isabelle Roquebert

2011-11-12

The author was part of the "Alternative Management" third year program in HEC in 2010.

In our society, work is preached like an essential value that cannot be ignored. The search of full employment is one of the main objectives of economic policies. Work, defined as the human action on nature in order to provide for human needs, is regarded as an essential condition to humanity survival. The degrowth is a movement of thought that precisely questions the central values of our society, in order to identify the causes of the current general crisis. This movement thus questions work. Is this worship dedicated to work legitimate for the degrowth? Is work, such as it is made concrete in our society, reassessed? Does work, like vital and unilateral transformation of nature, remain legitimate in a degrowth society?
