Barefooted Bankers - by Jean-Michel Servet[Reading report] by Céline Lévy

2012-12-01

The author was part of the “Alternative Management” third year program in HEC in 2011-2012. She also holds a Bachelor degree in Human Sciences from Oxford University. Céline Lévy interests herself a lot for microfinance and for synergies between the public and private sectors, for initiatives promoting economic development.

Jean-Michel Servet aims at presenting a critical analysis of microfinance that underlines its limits and depicts its promises. After defining the term, the author explores the context and roots of its development and growth. He illustrates the diversity of the models of microfinance organizations and analyzes the conditions of their success as well as their performances, impacts and effects. Finally, he advocates a new way of thinking microfinance, not as a neoliberal instrument, but rather as a practice pertaining to the field of the social economy, which has to be articulated with the public sector. Barefooted Bankers offers a transversal, highly documented and fascinating analysis of microfinance – a financial practice qualified as alternative – and inscribes it in the field of the social economy.
