Protecting the public interest in a technological society[Research paper] by Nicolas Trimoulet

Technology is overwhelming. It’s everywhere in our lives but we paradoxically often have a very limited understanding of it. We have been delegating to those we call experts the management and knowledge in these areas. We yet talk about areas for whom we should have a great deal of interest; environment, health, economy etc. Due to this growing complexity and some tragic events, we see the rise of more and more organizations using expertise to protect the public interest and help the citizen to get back a say on the matter. These associations then break some barriers to get in what used to be a private ownership. Therefore, the matters that drive our interest are to have a better understanding of the creation process of those organizations, to analyze the consequences of using expertize as a leverage tool and, finally, to study what type of actions they undertake. This strategy, as we will find, is a choice that comes with consequences.
