Community-organizing in the US – Non-profits for hire?[Research paper] by Laure de Buyer

2013-08-15

The author was part of the "Alternative Management" third year program in HEC in 2012-2013. After an experience for Procter & Gamble, Laure de Buyer worked in Cameroun, for Solidarité Technologique. She actually envisages starting her career in the third sector.

The French urban policy are currently facing difficulties and are thus attracted by the American model of community-organizing, and especially by the community-based organizations (CBOs), that are local nonprofits defending the interests of a community. However, those CBOs are facing professionalization, growing financial needs, institutionalization and for many of them, have entered a “contracting regime” with the public sector. To what extent contracting with the State changes the CBOs and shapes them in nonprofits for hire? My research field in a CBO in New York is a telling example of the tensions and evolutions in the American non-profit sector
