The historical construction of the employing of idlers[Research paper] by Anne-Laure Alloncle

2014-03-07

Anne-Laure Alloncle graduated from the ESCP business school in 2013. She is also a former student from the Alternative Management specialization program from HEC. She holds a Master's degree in philosophy, from the University of La Sorbonne, where she currently studies

In the Age of Antiquity, labour was a salient characteristic of non-free men, such as slaves. With Christianism, it became synonymous with a divine punishment. In French, the word travail etymlologically refers to the tripalium, which is the name of an instrument of torture. Yet, with the French Revolution, working becomes a panacea, providing people with social legitimacy, identity and rights. Adopting a genealogical perspective, this research is based upon marxian and foucaldian analyses (among others) and aims at understanding this reversal. Showing the contingency of the labour imperative, it highlights the possibility of the choice of idleness
