XY, On masculine identity - by Elisabeth Badinter[Reading report] by Anais Denoits

Etudiante de la Majeure Alternative Management - HEC Paris - 2007-2008

XY, On masculine identity is an essay which deals with the traditional perception of masculinity and femininity, and with the contemporary evolution of the manliness. What is it to be a man in industrial and postindustrial societies? How is created the “ideal” man? How is built an identity which is not just biologically or genetically-based? Exploring the crisis of the male identity at work or at home, as a worker, as a husband, as a father, Elisabeth Badinter analyzes the links between pedagogy and identity on one side, and sexuality and identity on the other side. A summary of the first part of L'invention de soi, a book of Jean-Claude Kaufmann, helps to clarify the whole text of Elisabeth Badinter.
