Alleviating poverty through profits. The BoP, a new paradigm to alleviate poverty ?[Research paper] by Lorraine Gérard

2008-10-05

The author graduated from HEC Paris in 2008.

As today's rich get richer, today's poor are still facing many plagues that jeopardize the economic and political balance not only of their own countries but of the overall world. This situation can be seen as the proof of the inefficiency of the development policies that have been carried on so far. Believing that poverty is not a fatality but a problem that still can be solved C.K.Prahalad and his supporters are proposing a new approach in which the poor are seen as consumers forming a market at the “base of the pyramid” that can become the new source of growth and profits for the private sector and especially for multinational companies (MNC).
