La société de consommation (Consumer society) - by Jean Baudrillard[Reading report] by Katiuce Rodrigues Botelho

2008-10-07

The author was part of the "Alternative Management" third year program in HEC Paris in 2007/2008.

What does “consume” mean? Or rather, does consuming still represent something? In his book, Jean Baudrillard shows to what extent consumption has been shaping relationships in western societies. Indeed, not only is consumption a means to satisfy our needs, it has now become what tells people apart. Its influence is felt everywhere, to such a degree that today, consumption actually embodies morals, compellingly wrecking the essence of humanity —nature and the relationships between people— which is falsely recreated and perverted. This 30-year-old book has not aged at all and is of great help in the understanding of our society, its shallow structures and especially its highly jeopardized future. The author's acute intelligence, together with his straightforward style, has contributed to making La société de consommation a true reference on the subject.
