Is Capitalism moral? - by André Comte-Sponville[Reading report] by Violaine Laurens-Berge

2008-11-08

The author was part of the "Alternative Management" third year program in HEC Paris in 2007/2008.

Is Capitalism moral? is a synthesis of several lectures delivered by André Comte-Sponville about business ethics. His first goal is to clarify the concept of relations between economics, politics and ethics in a context where the trend of Corporate Social Responsibility might lead to confusion on this topic. According to him, it's a mistake to mix profit and ethics because economics and ethics belong to separate fields. Mixing them is not the way to solve the problems caused by the drifts of capitalism. Capitalism is neither moral nor immoral; it is a-moral in the sense that moral has basically nothing to do with economics.
