Industrial ecology, a strategy combining the economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development?[Research paper] by Elodie Payre

2009-01-30

The author was part of the "Alternative Management" third year program in HEC Paris in 2007/2008.

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse a new business model, which takes into account environmental constraints, and to assess its economic relevance. Does it add value ? Industrial ecology, the concept studied in this paper, considers « the industrial system as a specific case of ecosystem » and aims at making its running compatible with the one of biological ecosystems. The exchange of material and energy flows as well as the common use of services could enable companies to save money and to earn additional incomes (increased resource efficiency, selling of by-products to commercial partners, implementation of synergies). Can profit-making and nature conservation really go together as many people coming from both the academic and the business worlds, who are convinced by the assertion of the « triple bottom line », maintain? If the answer is yes, what are the necessary conditions to achieve this double economic and environmental objective ?
