The economics of functionality, a solution for combating the environmental degradation of the planet? - by Dominique Bourg[Proceedings] by Dominique Bourg

2009-03-16

Dominque Bourg holds three licenses (BA degrees), two maitrises, two D.E.A.'s (research MA's), two doctorates (Strasbourg 2, 1981; EHESS, Paris, 1995) and a Habilitation à diriger des Recherches en Philosophie (accreditation to supervise research in philosophy) (Lyon 3, 1998). After having taught philosophy at the Technological University of Troyes, he specialized in teaching sustainable development and its implications in industry and society. He is a Full Professor at the University of Lausanne and, since September 1st 2006, Director of the Institute of Territorial Policy and Human Environment (French acronym: IPTEH).

How to face the environmental challenges which threaten our planet and fight against climate changes produced by our current system of resource exploitation? Dominique Bourg presents the principles of the economics of functionality, a system which, by substituting the leasing of goods for their sale, would force manufacturers to optimize the quality produced goods in order to make them last as long as possible. Differences in application of this system would arise following whether it were a matter of B to B or B to C. Presently concerning only experimental niches, the economics of functionality could be expanded if efforts in multidisciplinary research are carried out in that direction.
