Eco villages: from utopia to real practice, in Europe and France[Essay] by Thomas Lebreuil

2009-04-16

“Alternative Management” specialization of the third-year HEC Paris business school program.

Eco-village projects have been flourishing in France and Europe for the last few years. But what is exactly an eco-village? Is it only about the environmental dimension? After reflecting on the totality of characteristics of an ideal eco-village, this essay will inquire into the state of reflection on the subject on the European level. In particular, we will study an example of a “model” village. Then, we will consider more specifically the role that France occupies in this movement, again using a concrete example, and we will try to answer this question: are the current eco-village projects a kind of “greenwashing” which advertise a lot but in reality only respect norms, or are they really harbingers of innovation?
