Culture and knowledge: converging “sciences”, trends and issues[Essay] by Guillaume Narbonne

2009-10-16

Former student of the Alternative Management Programme, class of 2009, interested in sustainable development, knowledge economy, innovation and social issues

For four centuries, the Cartesian model of scientific method has been prominent. Although it was the reason for some notable progress, it is now reaching its limits, as science is faced with conundrums and contradictions in several fields and as the current state of scientific progress proposes few promising solutions to cope with the challenges our planet is currently facing. In this essay, we will study the concept of complexity, which was developed by Edgar Morin and triggered the birth of a new scientific paradigm, and its applications to current science issues. We will then show how converging sciences, if they overcome the challenges they are facing, can be the starting point of a new era of more harmonious scientific progress.
