The Cathedral and the Bazaar - by Eric S. Raymond[Reading report] by Marie Mourad

2012-07-27

The author was part of the “Alternative Management” third year program in HEC in 2011. She has an experience in public sector consulting and also worked for the Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development. Marie Mourad also has an interest for sustainable development issues, as well as for the third sector.

This essay by E. S. Raymond is one of the leading texts related to open source software, as opposed to property software. Comparing two different development models, the “bazaar” style (based on the meeting of multiple approaches) and the “cathedral” style (based on centralized construction), the author demonstrates that the development model chosen by open source software such as Linux is fundamentally more efficient than a closed approach.
