The Chinese banking market is one of the most attractive markets for investors and bankers in the West. Since the reform and opening up of China in 1978, the banking system is well built and ready to adapt to the global banking system. Today, in such a market, what are the strategic issues for foreign financial institutions, what are the most interesting ways of being in China, joint ventures or investment in stocks? In this paper, we will first recall a history of the Chinese banking system and its development over the past thirty years. Then we will analyze in detail the opportunities and constraints that arise in the banking industry to foreign banks, and finally we will see some alternative ways
