Williamsburg, history of a musical cluster - The gentrification of the Brooklyn neighbourhood through the rise and fall of an alternative music scene[Research paper] by Elena Schmitt

2013-08-17

The author was part of the “Alternative Management” third year program in HEC in 2010-2011.

Since the end of the 1980s, the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Williamsburg has experienced a phenomenon of gentrification triggered by a local musical cluster. In the 1990s and 2000s, local musicians built a strong alternative music scene that became a symbol for a generation. The gentrification that followed was part of the continued development of the New York economy and had an irreversible impact on the musical cluster, eventually leading to a partial destruction.
